Santorini is so much more than just the famous Sunset and Fira town. There are many small and larger villages that most of them remain authentic and should be on your bucket list when visiting the island. Here are 5 villages to visit and get a glimpse of authentic Santorini.
- Pyrgos
The largest preserved village in Santorini and the former capital of the island, stands in the heart of pre volcanic hinterland built on a hill enjoying panoramic views of the island and the Aegean sea. Although not filled with 5 star hotels, Pyrgos has its own charm through the untouched and more rustic everyday life. Visit the The Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (built in 1660), mingle with the locals and make a stop at one of the traditional tavernas for a local meze.
2. Emporio
Settled in the heart of the island, Emporio used to be the center of trade affairs in the past. With a strong medieval character and well preserved houses it’s a unique place to visit. Don’t forget to walk up to the 15th century fortress that was built strategically to protect the locals from the pirate attacks.
3. Imerovigli
Located on the Caldera and settled between Fira town and Oia village, is Imerovigli. The position of the village provides a great sight of the volcano and the caldera and is a perfect place to visit during the sunset hour. In Imerovigli stands the rock of Skaros, where there are now ruins of a medieval castle. If you’re up to hiking, you should definitely walk from Imerovigli to Skaros rock and the soak in the breathtaking views. If you are more into relaxing, good news is that Eden Villas are located in Imerovilgi. All three villas offer striking, unobstructed views of the volcano, Skaros rock and the sunset.
4. Megalochori
Megalochori is located in the heart of the island’s wine area. One of the most traditional villages with well preserved mansions, traditional wine canaves (wine cellars) and picturesque stone cobbles alleys. A great destination to learn more about the wine making tradition on the island and taste some of the best Santorinian wine labels.
5. Oia
Oia village no need for further introduction. The most visited and photographed village on the island, although usually crowded is where all the fun and buzz is.
